Debbie Bye has been in Gippsland since 1994. As the former Manager of ABC Gippsland and current Station Manager of the Christian Community Radio Station, Life FM, she has been and still is very involved in many aspects of the community. Debbie is originally from Queensland and came to Gippsland after 8 years with ABC Radio in Mackay, where she was also heavily involved in community activities including local theatre. Her radio career started in Community Radio in Mackay in 1982. As a broadcaster, Debbie is very interested in history and while in Gippsland has received several awards including a High Commendation from the Order of Australia Media Awards for a radio series she produced for the Sale RSL's 75th Anniversary in 1995 and shared "overall winner" accolades with local historian and writer, Ann Synan for the radio series on the West Sale Migrants in the 2003 Victorian Community History Awards. Debbie was on the Emergency Planning Committee for East Gippsland from the 1996 floods until 2003 and was actively involved in follow up projects after the flood and the fires of 2003. She is President of the Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault and Treasurer of the Gippsland Women's Network. She is actively involved in the church scene in the region and the emergence of Life FM is evidence of how that section of the Gippsland community has responded to the call for support to establish a Christian Community Radio Station from scratch. This has been a tremendous effort from people of all backgrounds across the region and Debbie is happy to share the story with anyone who wants to hear.
